Post Mortem (Pablo Larrain, 2010)
Post Mortem is set during the 1973 military coup that overthrew the former president, Salvador Allende. The main character, Mario Cornejo, is a civil servant for the local morgue. He falls in love with a cabaret dancer, Nancy Puelma. Nancy's father and brother are taken by the military because of their leftist beliefs. After the military coup hit Chile, Mario is called to assist on the autopsy of President Salvador Allende. Mario's fear that Nancy won't love him becomes true in the end, when she chooses another man over Mario.
Post Mortem's political aspect draws the audience in to watch this raw and gritty film about the military taking its own action over the country. I thought the movie was very moving and real. I am not completely educated about the 1973 military coup overthrowing Salvador Allende, but this movie helps me understand the impact that this had on the country and the people. I find it really interesting that this movie was based off of a real person.
